Mesquite, TX – April 28, 2020 – The City of Mesquite announced steps it will take to monitor local businesses and enforce the details outlined by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to re-open specific businesses beginning May 1. Mesquite businesses will be expected to display occupancy limit signage in accordance with Executive Order limiting 25% occupancy in non-essential retail stores and restaurants. City staff will monitor businesses and address activities not in compliance with the rules to reopen. Residents wishing to report a business not incompliance with the order should contact the manager of the store and then call 911 to report the business to the City. The full report and the accompanying executive order are available at www.cityofmesquite.com/Coronavirus. Residents and businesses are encouraged to wear cloth face coverings (over the nose and mouth) and practice social distancing. Avoiding crowds and limiting physical contact are also efforts people should take to avoid spreading the virus. Phase One of the Governor's plan also re-opens museums and libraries under certain criteria. The City plans to keep its two libraries closed and limit use of park amenities at this time. Exercise in open space and on walking trails in parks remains open. City special events will remain canceled until further notice. The City continues to address summer camps and other recreational programs in May. The City anticipates additional changes to these guidelines when the Governor announces plans for Phase 2 in mid-May. Mayor Bruce Archer said, "This is great news for our businesses and the community. But it also comes with great responsibility for each business operator to follow the rules and every member of our community to continue social distancing behaviors. Residents and employees of these businesses are strongly encouraged to wear masks whenever you are in a store or in close contact with other people. This is not a time to let down our guard. If you notice an issue with a store, speak to the manager immediately." |

The Mineola Nature Preserve on the Sabine River encompasses 2,911 acres located in Wood County, and is home to East Texas species of critters that can fly, walk, crawl, and slither, and home to more than 193 species of birds, numerous wildlife, buffalo, longhorn cattle, and a pristine wetlands environment. Imagine walking along a railroad bed built in the 1880s as you step back in history. Owned by the City of Mineola, this is part of a comprehensive development plan to protect our natural wildlife and habitat for future generations.
