Michael Morrison of Mesquite

From the looks of Michael Morrison, you might expect the music that
reverberates from his Martin guitar to sound more like a tune on your iPod than from
your grandfather’s record collection. But this 15-year-old “bluegrass prodigy” from
Mesquite, Texas has been strumming the classic rhythms of bluegrass since he was in
diapers. While other freshmen-to-be have been gearing up for their first year of high
school, Michael has been traveling the U.S. all summer in hopes of striking a chord with
both young and old alike, to show that bluegrass is still “jammin” after all these years.
Many young bluegrass talents are now playing
to sold-out crowds across the U.S. Examples
include The Baker Boys, Sierra Hull and Ryan
Holladay. Holladay, who holds the record of
youngest person to play at the Grand Ole Opry
(appearing when he was five-years-old), was
spotlighted on an episode of Oprah called
“Amazing Kids.” Amazing is the best word to
describe these “newgrass” players like Michael
Morrison who are changing the face of
bluegrass.
