Beer, wine proposal could be on November ballot - have we all lost our minds?
6/23/07 - A group of Mesquite residents "Save Our Stores" believe the solution to grocery stores leaving the city lies in a reversal of the city’s prohibition of beer and wine sales for off-site consumption. This may actually end up on the November 6th ballot.
The City of Mesquite just doesn't need more intoxicated drivers on our streets or at public events! It is almost unbelievable that the Mesquite Firefighters Association and the Mesquite Police Association have both supported the committee as reported in the Mesquite News. It is simply naive to believe that residents or drivers just passing through Mesquite will stop at the local market and not at least pop the top on one can or more while driving. I think the Mesquite Firefighters Association and the Mesquite Police Association need to rethink their support of such a proposal!
The Save Our Stores group has this so, so wrong. They state that not selling beer and wine is the reason retailers are leaving Mesquite. Please residents of Mesquite open your eyes. The reason so many retailers have left the City of Mesquite is quite complex, but the most obvious is the entering of Wal-mart into Mesquite. We stated our concern back in 2004 - 12/18/04 How much is Wal-Mart really
costing North Mesquite??? Also take a look at a more recent article 4/9/07 - Why is some much retail business leaving the North Mesquite area?
It's excellent that Mesquite residents are forming groups to help with the problem of retail leaving Mesquite, but selling beer and wine just isn't the answer!
It is time for all residents to put on their thinking caps and see if we can solve this issue all together with a far more reasonable and safer approach.
A very concerned resident of Mesquite.
