5/18/07 - Mesquite city council's retreat at Marble Falls in July
Hello to all my friends here in Mesquite and the surrounding area.
Like many of you, I read yesterday's Editorial in the Mesquite News Star,. stating the papers' opposition to the Mesquite city council's retreat at Marble Falls in July.
In the past I have taken notice of where the Mesquite City council has taken its retreat. Each time I have thought of why the council feels it should leave the city it represents? Why go somewhere really nice to discuss and decide important issues and subjects that impact the daily lives of the citizens of Mesquite and the community in which they live in?
Now I have never written about this subject before, because I believed it did not rise to a level as some of the other issues our city has. But the newspaper's editorial has changed that. And I thought I'd let my thoughts on it be known.
I agree with the paper's concerns with openness and accessibility, not many regular citizens would find Marble Falls very convenient to them. I also would like to say that this trip would obviously not be a free ride. Someone would be paying for it, be it the council memebers themselves or the taxpayers. I would much rather have those dollars and cents spent here in Mesquite than Marble Falls or anywhere else.
There is no real absolute "MUST" reason for the council to go out of town for this retreat or working vacation as some may think.
I fully agree with the Mesquite News Star on this point.
If the council needs to get away, I suggest the Hampton Inn.
